The emergence of the Internet and technology brings many benefi ts
for the Indonesian society. However, there are several disadvantages
caused by the Internet ranging from unreliable information, mental and
addictive problems to social unrest in cyberspace. Not all of Internet users
in Indonesia can fi lter every information published in the cyberspace.
Ideally the media should educate, gives reliable information, and
makes society smarter. Unfortunately, some social media accounts
promote pseudoscience and myths including palmistry, numerology,
face reading, and the like which they claim as psychology. The media
has also the potential to incite social unrest such as the case related
to debate on whether LGBT is a form of mental disorder or not. The
psychological science and society in Indonesia, however, seem to have
no power to play their role as behavioral scientists in settling down
the issue in a scientifi c way. Hence, it is the tasks of the psychological
community in Indonesia to pay more attention to the social issues
around us. Psychology should not be exclusive. On the contrary, we
psychologists should develop interdisciplinary researches to boost our
quality and our contribution to our nation.
