Cyberloafing di Tempat Kerja: Merugikan atau Menguntungkan?

Seger Handoyo. “ Cyberloafi ng in the Workplace: Harmful or
             Benefi cial?“
In Indonesia today the number of internet users has reached
more than 88 million of the 259 million of the Indonesian population.
The Indonesian companies have also been using the internet to boost
their business. Employees’ behavior with regard to internet usage
can be categorized into two categories, namely that for work related
purposes and that for personal non-work related purposes. The use of
the company’s internet access for non-work related purposes is called
cyberloafi ng or cyberslacking including among others playing games
online and using the internet to earn an extra income. Personal factors
that cause cyberloafi ng include locus of control, personality, work
engagement, attitudes toward cyberloafi ng, and gender, while those
derived from work and the organization include role confl ict and role
ambiguity as well as perceived organizational justice, organizational
culture, and organizational design. Cyberloafi ng has both negative and
positive impacts for both the individual workers and the organizations. An
appropriate internet use policy in the workplace should be implemented
to minimize its negative impacts including reduced productivity and
violations of the law as well as to boost its positive impacts including
reducing stress, balancing work life and family, growing creative ideas,
building networks which are benefi cial for both the individual employees
and the organization as a whole.
