Elizabeth T. Santosa. “Effective Parenting for Children in the
             Digital Era.”
Indonesia is labeled as a country with the largest number of
media users in Southeast Asia. However, excessive use of media and
technology can negatively affect children’s development on several
aspects including motoric skills, physical proportions, neurological
growth, cognitive ability, moral and values, linguistic skills, social
and interpersonal skill, and gender identifi cation. Therefore, there is a
great need to understand the characteristics of children in the digital
era and the way the growth of media and technology affect children’s
development. Parents need to understand the pros and cons of the
excessive use of media and technology in order to determine the most
appropriate and effective parenting style for their children especially in
relation with the appropriate use of the information technology. Some
family rules need to be implemented to prevent children from falling into
negative behaviors caused by the excessive use of gadget. A thorough
understanding of the characteristics of children in the digital era and
the impact of using gadget excessively would give parents insights that
technological development is moving fast and cannot be dammed. To
really understand the pros and cons of the use of media and technology
parents should continously seek to upgrade their knowledge about the
development of media and technology. Parents need to be able to play
the role as wise leaders who give positive directions in raising their
children. They should set and execute family rules and demand their
children to responsible for their actions while at the same time give them
freedom to speak and to be listened to.
