Fenomena Kekinian dan Potensi Masalah Kejiwaan

Josephine Maria Julianti Ratna. The Phenomenon of Being Up-To-
Date and the Potential of Mental Problems.
Our community and its current communication style are very
different than they were 10 to 20 years ago. The infl uence of technology
and its advanced applications/program have succesfully attracted
people – mostly young people - to get them permanently online and
connected through the many options of social media. The benefi t of
getting connected online has enabled people to search about anything
they need as well as to keep self-updated on what other people are
doing through various social media. As more people with their ‘magic’
smartphone are ‘glued’ and hardly disconnected except during sleeping,
the symptoms of FoMO ( Fear of Missing Out), MoMO (Mystery of
Missing Out), FoMoMO (Fear of Mystery of Missing Out), FoJi (Fear
of Joining In), BROMO (When your ‘Bros’ and friends protect you from
Missing Out) and SLOMO (Slow to Missing Out) become more common.
FoMO referes to the feeling of anxiety that something great and fun may
be happening somewhere. Someone is making money, travelling to nice
places, making more money whilst the individual could only see it through
the social media. The difference between all terms are briefl y explained
throughout the article. Another interesting fact about the phenomenon
and the urge to get updated info are the widely used acronyms to
explain something which are communicated in writing/ chatting mode
rather than spoken. The terms CIIMW (Correct me if I am wrong), GMTA
(Great man things alike), HTH (Hope this helps) are amongst the many.
Findings of previous research for the last 10 years are seen relevant
to explain the psychological perspective towards the discussion. The
advanced technology provides great benefi ts as well as problems to
individuals when they are no longer in or loosing control. Simple tips to
deal with the negative impacts of technology are pointed out.
