Kharitas Purna Abdi Keraf. “Scrutinizing Social Media Research
in Indonesia: A Review on Scope.”
Social media has immense infl uence to the Indonesians. It grows more
and more popular each and every day, prompting both order and chaos
in society, and leaving several question marks to Nusantara’s behaviour
scientists. What are the fi elds of study that have a close link with the
social media? What are the solutions and problems stemming from the
use of social media? Most importantly, what can we do as psychology
academicians in utilizing social media as a research ingredient? This
article discusses the use of scoping review in answering the above
questions. Three databases were searched in this review: PsycINFO,
PubMed and Scopus. A total of 685 articles were found to undergo a
further stringent selection in order to discover relevant literatures. A total
of 18 chosen articles were charted and then analyzed with approriate
method. The fi nding shows that the use of social media in business
environment was popular to be empirically examined. Politics, higher
education and social fi eld were also found to be the fi elds of choice
in conducting research concerning social media. Facebook and Twitter
were the two dominant platforms in the literatures, while Twitter served
as the main media in investigating political phenomena. The use of
social media was proven to bring more order than chaos, with order
outnumbering chaos in 2:1 ratio. Social media provided the simplicity
and effi cacy needed in communication and information functions,
helping the Indonesians in a wide array of areas including health,
education, and even disaster risk reduction. However, this fi nding may
also indicate that researchers tend to assume an uncritical orientation
in doing their research. Finally, some psychology was found in all the
studies included, whether in terms of theory, variable, or analysis. It is
suggested that the mastery of a research approach which is based more
on information technology would help psychology scientists to easiily
adapt themselves in the fi eld of human and social media science.
