| Catatan | We would like to give special thanks and acknowledge those who have supported and contributed to this book in different ways. First, and foremost, we would like to thank the Economic History Professor Ulf Jonsson and Agrarian History Professor Janken Myrdal, who are special contributors to this book. With support from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet - project number 2018-02051), the four of us have worked jointly on a project about the “Miracle Bean” throughout world history. As we mention briefly in the methods section of Chapter 1, we have been in constant dialogue with these experienced and well-read project colleagues, and it is impossible to overstate their importance for this book. While both have been central sparring partners and close readers of earlier drafts, Prof. Myrdal has been particularly important as an antidote to the danger of soy-centrism, offering his advice and comprehensive knowledge on matters of early Asian agrarian systems. He has done this both personally and in print, |

While both have been central sparring partners and close readers of earlier drafts, Prof. Myrdal has been particularly important as an antidote to the danger of soy-centrism, offering his advice and comprehensive knowledge on matters of early Asian agrarian systems. He has done this both personally and in print, with his texts A Theory Kit for World History (2022) and the forthcoming The Agricultural History of East and Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, Prof. Jonsson has been particularly helpful in exploring the roles of soy and other fats and oils in the burgeoning oil and margarine industries in Europe during the first half of the 20th century. Among other things, Ulf examined the historical production and trade reports in the FAO’s Rome library during March 2019 before it was completely closed due to the pandemic. While an increasing part of the vast material of the FAO library is digitized, important older sources still require long days of archival work before they can be found and scanned. The combined contribution of Profs. Jonsson and Myrdal have provided us with a solid sense of soy’s role in its wider context. |
